Day 1 - August 18: Travel day

Our adventure began on Wednesday morning with Heather frantically trying to get all her stuff packed, since she'd just gotten home from camp the night before and her stuff was in piles everywhere and not in the one bag that would be needed for a canoe trip.  Eventually, everything got packed, and we headed out the door, not quite sure what we were forgetting, but hoping it wasn't something too terribly important.

Heather's dad had some work to do in Dauphin, so we drove for a few hours and got there.  Aside from the occasional colourful and artistic fire hydrant, Dauphin isn't actually very exciting.  At the high school, where Heather's dad was doing his work, there was the following sign:

Why anyone would be golfing in a parking lot at a high school was totally beyond me.  But we left Dauphin behind and wound up in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, where things are almost as exciting as Dauphin.

But... at least the prairies have pretty sunsets, despite the fact that the parking lot is full of trucks and there's a pole in the way.

At the end of Day 1, Heather was winning the cow counting game, since Eric's cows had all died when we passed a graveyard right before Yorkton.
